Eleven years ago when my daughter and son-in-law opened Aaron’s Books, I was an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction books, usually in the genres of American and World History. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was missing a large collection of wonderful books.
Before Aaron’s Books, I read bestsellers and books that I had read about in the Washington Post or New York Times. Little did I realize that I had been missing some real GEMS.
Working in an independent bookstore, I discovered new authors whose names may not have been elevated to the Post or Times, but who write beautiful books. That is the strength of using your independent bookstore over a large box store or on-line seller. These books and authors just aren’t talked about or sold. The beauty of an Indie Bookstore, like Aaron’s, is that they introduce readers like myself to a world of books that I didn’t even know existed. Publishing can be a bit capricious, and it’s amazing how many incredibly talented writers and stories are overlooked.
So now, my go-to source for books to read is the monthly Indie Next List. I still read the best sellers, most recently The Nightingale, but my new love is finding these unheralded, but gorgeous, books and introducing them to our customers.
There are so many authors that I love, but let me share my most favorite:
My first choice for new fiction is AT THE EDGE OF THE ORCHARD by Tracy Chevalier; I would also recommend two other of her books, THE LAST RUNAWAY and REMARKABLE CREATURES. I have also just finished THE SUMMER BEFORE THE WAR by Helen Simonson who also wrote MAJOR PETTIGREW’S LAST STAND. Also, another wonderful book is Alexander McCall Smith’s rewriting of EMMA.
Here is a list of authors that I discovered in the bookstore and highly recommend:
Visit, call, or email Aaron’s Books and try some of these Indie Bookstore gems. I hope you love them as much as I did!
